About Us
St. Michael’s Centre has been a not for profit, faith-based hospice and care home for over 43 years.
As the only faith-based care home founded under the sponsorship of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and United Churches, and as Burnaby’s first and only hospice, we welcome all religious and spiritual traditions. Our dedicated long-term staff are committed to exceptional care, and our central location near Metrotown Centre ensures convenience for families.

Our Board of Directors
Our Board of Directors consists of three representatives from each of our founding churches as well as members at large. The majority of our Board of Directors live in or have close ties to the Burnaby community.
Michael Cheung
Chair

Michael is a proud member of the Board at St. Michael’s Centre. He was born in Hong Kong and came to Canada at the age of 5 where he spent most of his childhood growing up in the Burnaby area.
Currently, he is an accountant by trade and works for a Burnaby-based small business. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, playing sports, hanging out with friends/family, and volunteering.
Norm Grdina
Vice Chair, Director at Large

Norm is a Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) who specializes in providing responsible financial tools and reporting to First Nations, Tribal Councils, and Treaty Groups. He holds key positions in the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association (AFOA) of BC, including Director and Chairperson of the AFOA-sponsored Technical Advisory Group (TAG). Norm is actively involved in Audit Committees for both BC and Canada. His contributions to enhancing financial management knowledge within First Nation governments are well-regarded.
He also serves as a Director for the First Nations Financial Management Board and offers his expertise as a Business Advisor to owner-managed businesses across various industries. With his designation as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and membership in the Private Investigators Association of BC (PIABC), Norm assists clients in fraud detection and prevention.
Norm’s leadership extends to his roles on the boards of the National Aboriginal Trust Officers Association and the Aboriginal Financial Officers’ Association of Canada. He has been a consistent presence on the Aboriginal Financial Officers’ Association of BC board, Technical Advisory Group (TAG), and Audit Committees.
Tony Sauder
Treasurer, Anglican

Tony was appointed to the Board in 2021. He is a retired Professional Forester who spent his working career in forest harvesting for both industry and research. In addition, Tony is active at both the Diocesan and parish levels in stewardship and parish development.
Tony enjoys challenges and solving problems, and wants to bring the skills he has learned through his working career and church volunteer work to assist St. Michael’s.
Lisa Qian
Secretary

Lisa Qian graduated from Simon Fraser University (SFU) and has been living in Burnaby with her family for 25 years. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and currently works for a non-profit organization. In her spare time, Lisa enjoys reading, hiking, and gardening.
Rosamond Smith
Roman Catholic

Rosamond was appointed to the board in 2022. She is a retired physiotherapist who spent her 40 year career in a variety of clinical settings in urban and rural communities in BC & Alberta.
Rosamond enjoys making pottery, hiking and traveling to visit family. She has a long history of volunteering with various community organizations and is active in her parish.
Rosamond is delighted to offer her experience in support of St. Michael’s Centre mission to provide excellence in care.
Mike Garisto
Roman Catholic

Rosamond was appointed to the board in 2022. She is a retired physiotherapisMike has been married 30+ years and is the proud father of 4 adult children and grandfather of one energetic 2 year old boy. He has spent his entire adult life in service to others, working with youth in sports, coaching at the elementary, high school and college level, providing representation support to workers as a union representative for 35 years, first as a volunteer and then as a full time union officer, helping build financial stability for families through estate planning and insurance tools as a Fraternal Benefits Specialist with the Knights of Columbus. Mike also helps seniors with affordable housing through charitable foundations, serving first as Vice President and then President for more than 10 years.t who spent her 40 year career in a variety of clinical settings in urban and rural communities in BC & Alberta.
Analyn Perez
Roman Catholic

Analyn joins the board as a Roman Catholic representative. With over 25 years as a Registered Nurse and a Master’s in Health Administration from UBC, she is currently a Director of Clinical Operations at BC Children’s Hospital. While her expertise is in pediatric oncology, it also includes experience in major redevelopment projects, governance, and quality initiatives. Dedicated to excellence in patient and family centred care, Analyn fosters innovation, quality, and collaboration across all age groups, working closely with patients, families, and healthcare teams. She is excited to contribute to the board and looks forward to supporting its mission and goals.
The Rev. Justin Cheng
Anglican

Justin (he/them) is currently one of the Anglican representatives on the Board. He is the priest-in-charge of All Saints Anglican Church in Burnaby which is located on Royal Oak Avenue, just a few blocks east of St. Michael’s Centre.
Justin’s involvement with SMC includes leading a monthly worship service as well as ministering to parishioners of All Saints who were residents. Justin has also visited people on occasion in the hospice who have requested pastoral support. Justin was ordained priest in 2015 on Vancouver Island and became the priest at All Saints in 2017.
He enjoys reading both fiction and nonfiction, working out, and taking care of his pet cat, Ian, who keeps him on his toes.
Rob De Lazzari
Director at Large

Rob is President of Deltec Electric Ltd, which has been based in Burnaby since its inception almost 30 years ago. Providing electrical design and build services for the film industry for over 25 years.
He has served on the board of the Italian Chamber of Commerce for over 25 years and served on the building committee of the Notre Dame Regional Secondary redevelopment project for all three phases.
Rob joined the St. Michael’s Centre Board in 2021.
